Compensation: This position has a maximum bi-weekly salary. Compensation depends on certification. A comprehensive benefit package that includes health insurance with medical, dental, and vision coverage, life insurance, and participation in the Indiana Public Retirement System 1977 Police Officers’ & Firefighters’ Retirement Fund as well as paid time off and vacation. The Town of Cedar Lake has an employee assistance program through Franciscan Health.

The successful candidate will receive the following:

  • One (1) year of service credit for every two (2) years of qualifying prior fire service, with a maximum award of ten (10) years of credited service.
  • Prior service credit may be applied in accordance with applicable laws, pension requirements, and Town policies.
  • All qualifying service will be verified before credit is granted.
  • Paramedic certification and Training Reimbursement Agreement waived.

Job Summary: The Town of Cedar Lake Fire Department serves and protects over 16,000 citizens within a rapidly growing community. The department provides emergency medical and fire response, plan reviews, building inspections, public education, community outreach, and much more.

Minimum Requirements:

  1. Pension Eligibility. The candidate must qualify as a lateral transfer within the 1977 Police Officers’ and Firefighters’ Pension Fund, subject to applicable pension laws, regulations, and administrative requirements.

What Municipal Water Customers on the West Side need to do:

  • Do not use irrigation or sprinkler systems during this period until we give further notice; the ban starts Monday, November 2, and will remain in effect until the water sample tests pass and we announce it is safe to proceed.
  • You may continue to use water as normal for household use. However, do not use irrigation and sprinkler systems until further notice, starting Monday, November 2. This restriction will remain in effect until water sample testing passes and we issue an all-clear. (If system pressure drops below 20 psi due to high demand during this period, we will send a separate notification.)

Timeline:

  • In the best-case scenario, if both the maintenance work and the water sample testing go smoothly, we should be completely back online by Wednesday evening, November 4.
  • If the refill or testing takes longer than anticipated, the irrigation restriction will stay in place until the testing is successful. We will post daily updates on this page and send Rave Notifications to affected areas during the process, and we will issue an all-clear notice as soon as the results are available.

Job Summary

The Town Manager is the chief administrative officer for the Town and is responsible for overseeing municipal operations, including public works, water and wastewater utilities, infrastructure projects, personnel, contracts, and regulatory compliance. This position works directly with the Town Council, Clerk-Treasurer, and serves as staff liaison to the various boards and commissions of the Town.

The Town Manager will plan, organize, coordinate, and direct through Department Heads, superintendents, and support staff the operations of the Town. Develop and direct the implementation of goals, objectives, policies, procedures, and work standards. Advise and make recommendations to the Town Council. Attend Town Council and board meetings.

Other duties include but are not limited to compliance with local, state, and federal regulations; preparing and administering the annual budget and capital projects with the Clerk-Treasurer; completing required regulatory reports and filings; and coordinating grants and community development initiatives. The Town Manager will supervise the Town’s public affairs and relations, including responding to citizen and press inquiries, and will manage, supervise, and delegate special projects on a wide range of topics as needed.

Education, Knowledge, and Skills

The ideal candidate will have a bachelor’s degree in public administration, public policy, political science, or a related field and/or be able to demonstrate equivalent work experience. Prior experience in local government, municipal administration, or a related field is required.

The candidate should have an understanding of local government including town operations, municipal utilities, planning, zoning, and development, policies and regulations, as well as budgeting. The successful candidate will possess strong leadership, communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills, and must be comfortable working with elected officials, employees, regulatory agencies, contractors, boards and commissions, and the public.

We are pleased to announce that the Town of Cedar Lake has published the 2025 Consumer Confidence Reports (CCRs) for both of its public water systems. These reports are now available on the Town Documents page.

What is a Consumer Confidence Report?

A Consumer Confidence Report — also called an Annual Drinking Water Quality Report — is a document that every community water system in the United States is required by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to provide to its customers each year. The report covers the period of January 1 through December 31, 2025, and summarizes where your water comes from, what testing was performed, and the levels of any regulated contaminants detected.

The presence of a detected contaminant does not necessarily mean your water poses a health risk — federal and state standards set limits well below levels considered harmful. The CCR is designed to provide you with full transparency into your drinking water quality.

Cedar Lake’s Two Water Systems

Cedar Lake operates two separate public water systems, each with its own report:

  • Cedar Lake Water Works (Public Water Supply ID: IN5245047) — serving the west side of the community
  • Cedar Lake – Robins Nest (Public Water Supply ID: IN5245067) — serving the east side of the community

Both systems use groundwater as their source of drinking water.

Where to Find the Reports

Both reports are available on the Town Documents page. The reports have been published in an accessible web format in compliance with ADA Title II requirements.

A Note for Residents on Private Wells

Cedar Lake has a large number of residents who rely on private wells rather than the Town’s municipal water systems. If you are on a private well, this report does not apply to your water supply. Private wells are not regulated by the EPA or the Town — you are responsible for monitoring your own water quality.

The Indiana Department of Health (IDOH) recommends that private well owners test their water at least once per year. Since many pollutants are colorless and odorless, the only way to know the quality of your drinking water is to collect a sample at your tap.

The IDOH Health Laboratories offer water test kits for bacteriology, nitrates, fluoride, lead, copper, and arsenic. For information on ordering a test kit or to find a certified lab near you, visit the IDOH Water Testing page or call the IDOH Laboratories at (317) 921-5874.

Cedar Lake’s Water Department has begun its hydrant flushing program. Work started today near the Parrish water tower and is moving north, with the Monastery South and Monastery North areas expected to take the remainder of this week.

Residents in these areas may experience temporary water pressure fluctuations and discoloration. This is normal and expected during flushing operations.

If you notice discolored water: Run your cold water tap for a few minutes until it clears. We recommend holding off on laundry until the water runs clear.

increased demand on its water supply. While the Town is currently capable of producing
sufficient water to meet average household needs, the widespread installation of in-ground irrigation systems has placed additional strain on the water system.

In response to the issue, and at the request of Indiana Department of Environmental
Management, Town officials have evaluated the system and determined that a scheduled
irrigation plan can be implemented to manage water usage more effectively. This
controlled irrigation schedule will go into effect.

We respectfully request that all Homeowners’ Associations (HOAs) stagger their irrigation
start times throughout the day to help distribute water usage more evenly. Your
cooperation in adhering to this schedule is essential to the success of this initiative and the
well-being of our community.

Please ensure that irrigation occurs only on your assigned day. If the water system
continues to experience undue stress, a complete ban on lawn irrigation may become
necessary.

We sincerely appreciate your understanding and cooperation in this matter.
